Amtico Signature LVT is a quality Luxury (LVT) product.  It is a Dry Backed product, this means that it will need to be fully adhered with the correct adhesive and cannot be laid as a floating floor unlike the Clic products.

The preparation of the sub floor is key to the successful final finish of these products.  The fitters will be looking to achieve a smooth flat well adhered sub floor to enable them to glue down the LVT product successfully and with the best final finish.

The preparation required will depend on the original sub floor presented to the fitter.  This product is suitable to be used over underfloor heating, but it is very important that the type of system you either already have or intend to install is classed as being suitable for LVT, and also that the preparation of the sub floor will vary depending on the underfloor heating type.

Amtico Signature LVT requires a smooth dry and even sub floor.  This can mean that in order to get the floors level before the final smooothing compound is applied they may need to do a certain amount of preparation before, this is the unknown part of any project.  If the floors presented are already level then the job is quite straight forward, but when clients are removing walls, having extensions or this has been carried out in the past and the floor levels have not been rectified at the time, extra preparation will be required, this is where the skill of the Country Flooring team is applied with our in depth knowledge of the preparation required.

1). A bare concrete floor that has had no previous product glued to it will require a smoothing compound such as F Balls Stopgap 300 or Stopgap 1200, as a guide each bag of this product covers around 4sqm to a depth of 3mm, the concrete must be primed if using Stopgap 300 to ensure good adhesion.  In most cases the preference would be to apply the smoothing compound in one application to the whole area, but as with all these things this is not always feasible, so any joints would require further preparation with a product such as Ardex Feather Finish.

If the concrete has previously had either Thermal Plastic tiles with a Bitument backing , or Ceramic Tiles that have left some residue adhesive, or Ceramic Tiles still in place, it will be necessary to use a product such as Stopgap 1200 to ensure good adhesion.  Any LVT that is fully adhered will create a tension in the sub floor, so good adhesion of the smoothing compound is essential.

2) Wooden Sub floors, such as Pine Floorboards or Chipboard will need to be covered with a minimum of 5.5mm Flooring Grade Plywood such as FG1 or SP101, Country Flooring stock this in our own warehouse, it is mportant that the plywood is Flooring Grade,  WPS is not the correct product. Once the Plywood has been installed to the very strict specification under British Standards it will need all the joints and screws holes covered with either a Feather Finish or a Flexible smoothing compound such as F Balls Stopgap 700 but, Stopgap 1200 is also suitable for this use.

3) Combination Concrete and Wooden sub floors will require all of the above preparation , but the key to this is the joining of the different sub floor types. This is the floor layers skill, but in most cases a Flexible smoothing compound would be applied to the Plywood and across the joint and in many cases over the whole Concrete area.  Due to the cost the Flexible smoothing compound being more expensive, sometimes the majority of the concrete will be covered in a different product.

Once the smoothing compounds have been applied the floor will typically be buffed with a buffing machine to get the best finish possible, before the LVT is finally laid.  The fitters will then look at the layout of the flooring and take measurements to centre any plank design, or mark the flooring out if they are fitting borders or in some cases aa more complicated designs.

A suitable adhesive for LVT is applied, if any areas are in front of bright windows, or conservatories, or there is underfloor heating, then a High Temperature adhesive  (HT) will be used to mitigate this.

When the intention is to have the LVT fitted over an underfloor heating system please bear in mind that the UF heating product installed must allow for a flat smooth finish.  So if trays are used for a water system, the trays will need to be filled with smoothing compound, and if an electric matt is used a smoothing compound will need to be applied to a depth of 10mm, to spread the heat, this does add considerably to the installation cost of the LVT.  If you have a water system that has been covered with concrete, then the fitting is straightforward, so you can see it is essential that you do your homework on this matter.
